Ocean Sciences | Seismology | Hydrology | …and beyond

AGU, in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the University of Arizona, have a 2-year NSF grant (2524899) that convenes, engages, and co-develops a critically-needed, sustainable framework for discipline-specific data and software sharing practices with three geoscience disciplines: ocean sciences, seismology, and hydrology.

This project intends to empower the target disciplines to be knowledgeable of, connected to, and adopt use of, their community’s existing data and software resources, technologies and leading practices.

Working with society leadership, we are facilitating the addition of an Open Science Ambassador to coordinate within the discipline membership and across a growing community of global Open Science Ambassadors.

Over time, this work will lead to higher quality, interoperable data, understandable software, being shared through community-preferred disciplinary repositories, accessible for immediate reuse in data-driven research, including AI/ML applications.

A Framework Toolkit, will serve as a template for additional disciplines demonstrating community readiness.

To support the discipline communities, the project will provide an easy-to-customize web platform that managed the index of resources vetted by the community. If a community already has a tool, they are welcome to use that instead.

Open Science Ambassador

A volunteer leadership position within a disciplinary section or committee of a partner geoscience society (e.g., an American Geophysical Union Section, European Geophysical Union Division, or equivalent body within other participating societies). The Ambassador serves as the primary point of contact for the discipline leadership and members providing support and council on: collaborative data stewardship, development and usage of data and metadata standards, the benefits of domain data repositories and curation, and advancing incentives and recognition for research data and software stewardship. The Ambassador will serve as a steward for their discipline’s Resource Hub content, working with cross-society counterparts to keep the Hub updated and to solicit contributions from the community.
