Join us in San Francisco and online for AGU23. This year’s theme is Wide Open Science and we’re hosting a number of exciting town halls, learning opportunities, and more.
Open Science events at #AGU23
Open Science and Data Help Desk
In the Exhibit Hall, booth #1423
- Stop by the ESIP/AGU in-person Help Desk and ask a data or software expert your question! The Help Desk will be open for questions whenever the Exhibit Hall is open.
- Come see presentations on a range of topics to boost your career and technical skills, from using MyST Markdown, managing your physical samples data, and sharing your MATLAB code to writing your first README file. (Full presentation schedule is available at this link and full Help Desk schedule is available here.)
Schedule: whenever the Exhibit Hall is open,
Monday: 15:00 - 18:00
Tuesday-Wednesday: 10:00 - 18:00
Thursday: 10:00 - 13:00
Other Open Science Events from the AGU Team:
MONDAY 11 December:
- Join our discussion on the use of AI and ML across AGU’s sections, featuring speakers including the Editor-in-Chief of the new AGU journal JGR: Machine Learning and Computation, AI researchers, and leadership from ESIP and AGU’s Hydrology section. Learn about the recently-published community report with recommendations for researchers and organizations on implementing guidelines on the ethical use of AI and weigh in on plans to keep this report updated in 2024!
- Proper attribution is vital for enabling a culture of open data sharing, but this can be challenging for complex datasets where many smaller datasets have been combined. Come share your challenges with complex data citations and hear about plans for a solution in this town hall.
TUESDAY 12 December:
- In this session, Brian Sedora will present on AGU’s Notebooks Now project publishing computational notebooks (see IN21A-03 Revolutionizing Scholarly Publishing: A Comprehensive Workflow for the Submission, Review, and Publication of Computational Notebooks as Primary Elements of the Scientific Record
Town Hall: Open Science Realities: How Open is Open?
- Join our discussion of discipline-specific considerations for open data, featuring speakers from across the Earth and space sciences with expertise in model and simulation data, physical samples, publishing data, and open science policy.
WEDNESDAY 13 December:
Town Hall: Notebooks Now! Advancing Notebooks as Scholarly Objects at AGU
- Come learn about AGU’s Notebooks Now! pilot, which will enable you to publish computational notebooks as though they were research articles - but with your code and figures integrated into the scholarly version of record, enabling interactivity and heightening transparency and reproducibility.
Career Center: Managing Your Digital Presence
- Your Digital Presence is often the first thing others see about your work. It’s a powerful tool to make sure that all your research outputs and achievements are visible and discoverable. Learn how to make sure your Digital Presence is ready in this tutorial.
THURSDAY 14 December:
IN41C - Fostering Wide-Open Science by Improving Collaboration, Innovation, Attribution, Identity, and Ethics in Data Repositories and Data (Re)publication I Poster
and
IN43A - Fostering Wide-Open Science by Improving Collaboration, Innovation, Attribution, Identity, and Ethics in Data Repositories and Data (Re)publication II Oral
- This session highlights the increasingly complex issues Earth Science Data Repositories face as they expand and evolve to deliver the highest value to the scientific community and public, from implementing the FAIR, CARE, and TRUST principles, to adapting to new technologies like AI.
FRIDAY 15 December:
IN53A - AI Models in Earth Science II Oral
- In this session, Kristina Vrouwenvelder will present on the community-run, AGU-convened project developing community recommendations for ethical use of AI and ML in the Earth, space, and environmental sciences (see IN53A-02 Ethical and Responsible Use of AI/ML in the Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences: New Community Recommendations
